A Botched Surgery Can Leave You With More Questions Than Answers

Surgery is always unsettling, but even more so when the outcome is not what you expected.

The National Quality Forum (NQF), a nonprofit that promotes quality in healthcare in the U.S., developed a list of “serious reportable events,” also known as “never events,” that occur in healthcare. The NQF list is a compilation of serious, largely preventable, and harmful clinical events, which include some types of surgical or invasive-procedure events. Although these are industry terms, some people refer to medical negligence that occurs during a surgical setting as a botched surgery.

Some examples of a botched surgery include:

  • Wrong Site Surgery — The surgeon performed surgery or an invasive procedure on the wrong site on your body.
  • Wrong Patient Surgery — The surgeon performed surgery or an invasive procedure on the wrong patient—maybe that was you.
  • Wrong Surgery — The surgeon performed the wrong surgery or other invasive procedure on you.

All three of these scenarios should really never happen and could likely cause unnecessary injury. Some such cases potentially lead to medical-negligence lawsuits.

But sometimes the procedure itself isn’t the issue—it’s what is left behind. When a foreign object is unintentionally left in the patient, it can inflict serious harm. However, the worst outcome of a botched surgery is when it causes death. When a loved one passes away, it is always immensely difficult. But when the death could have been prevented, it is absolutely devastating.

If you or a loved one has experienced a botched surgery, consider asking an Indiana medical malpractice lawyer to investigate the incident and determine whether medical negligence occurred and whether you have any rights against the healthcare provider, who failed to protect patient safety. Pursuing a medical malpractice claim can be a complex and involved process. The attorneys of
