Porter County Reading Foundaton

Porter County Reading FoundationThe Porter County Reading Foundation (PCRF) was founded in 1998 by Steven and Diana Langer. The purpose of the Foundation is to make it possible for all children to learn to read. The PCRF sponsors professional development workshops for teachers, a summer tutoring program for elementary school children, and partners with school corporations to put on early intervention programs. Since its inception, the PCRF has sponsored over 14 workshops, provided professional development to over 250 teachers, and provided intervention services for over 2500 children. The PCRF’s singular purpose is to make it possible for all children to learn to read at grade level by the conclusion of the third grade. Research has shown that until the third grade, children learn to read. After third grade, children read to learn.

In the summer of 2004, the PCRF moved into a new phase – individualized tutoring. Trained tutors began instructing children with creative and effective ways of learning to read. Parents were also involved by showing them specific ways they could help reinforce the strategies and skills their children were being taught.

In 2007, the PCRF expanded its program to include interns, allowing more teachers and classroom assistants to gain training and experience in these proven techniques and increasing the number of children our program could help.

2008 was celebrated by greatly expanding the program and creating a name for our program, Key Readers-Unlocking the Mysteries of Reading.
