Anderson, IN (October 26, 2026) – A woman suffered life-threatening injuries in a two-car crash around 6 a.m., according to the Anderson Police Department. Officers found two crashed vehicles at the intersection of West 53rd Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Anderson.
According to police, the preliminary investigation shows that a southbound car stopped at a traffic signal was struck from behind by another southbound car. The injured woman was a passenger in the stopped car, police said.
She was taken to a local hospital and then flown by medical helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital. The driver of the stopped car had minor injuries, and the driver of the car that struck it was not injured. Police have not released the names or ages of the people involved in the crash.
Both drivers stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, police said. As of the afternoon of October 26, police did not believe intoxication was a factor, and no signs of impairment were observed. The crash remains under investigation.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Rear-End Crashes and Passenger Injury Claims in Indiana
According to Indiana Crash Facts 2024, prepared for the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, Indiana had 45,280 rear-end crashes in 2024. Rear-end crashes accounted for the largest proportion of all crashes that year, at 23%.
Insurers can dispute fault even when a car is hit from behind. Indiana follows a modified comparative fault rule that reduces a claim by the claimant’s share of fault and bars recovery at 51% or more. A passenger in the stopped car may claim against the striking driver’s insurance, and underinsured motorist coverage may add protection.
- First steps: Get evaluated by a doctor promptly, since some injuries do not show up right away. Request the crash report number from the Anderson Police Department and ask that neither vehicle be repaired until its data is preserved. Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer before speaking with an attorney.
- Who may be liable: The driver who struck the stopped car may be responsible if the investigation supports it. An attorney can look at whether anyone else shares responsibility.
- Deadline: Indiana generally allows two years to file a personal injury claim (IC 34-11-2-4), which puts the deadline at October 26, 2028. Missing that date usually ends the right to sue.
