Intersection Accident Liability Under Indiana Traffic Law
Crashes at urban intersections, including those involving law enforcement vehicles, raise important questions about fault and legal responsibility under Indiana law. Indiana follows a comparative fault system, which means that any party found to be less than 51 percent at fault for a crash may still be eligible to recover compensation. That compensation is then reduced in proportion to the injured party’s share of fault. This standard applies broadly, regardless of whether a vehicle involved belongs to a private citizen or a government entity.
When a government-owned vehicle such as a police cruiser is involved in a collision, additional legal considerations may arise, including procedural requirements for filing claims against a public agency. An experienced Indiana car accident lawyer serving Indianapolis can help injured parties understand their rights, navigate those requirements, and evaluate all potential avenues for recovery before critical deadlines pass. Indiana’s statute of limitations gives injured parties two years from the date of an accident to file a personal injury claim, making prompt legal consultation essential.
