Putnam County, IN – Two Killed in Four-Vehicle Crash Involving Semi on U.S. 36

Two Killed in Four-Vehicle Crash

Putnam County, IN (October 12, 2026) – Two people were killed in a four-vehicle crash on U.S. 36 west of U.S. 231, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency personnel were dispatched at approximately 4:10 p.m. on October 12.

Witnesses told deputies that three vehicles were traveling eastbound on U.S. 36. They said the driver of the lead vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound semi-truck.

The lead vehicle sustained extensive damage, and the driver and the occupant of that vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene. The sheriff’s office is withholding their identities pending further notification and the ongoing investigation. The Putnam County Coroner’s Office will make the identifications after next of kin are notified.

Responding personnel found a semi-truck and bulk hauler that had overturned onto their sides and caught fire. Fuel that leaked from the semi-truck spread beneath two additional vehicles involved in the crash, which had sustained minor damage before the fire. No occupants were burned as a result of the fires that followed.

A hazmat team was called to the scene, and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management was notified of the leak. Emergency personnel closed U.S. 36 in both directions about three miles west of the Bainbridge area. All lanes reopened around 1:20 a.m. on October 13.

The semi-truck driver was airlifted to a medical facility for treatment. The driver spoke with deputies at the scene before being flown out. Putnam County EMS and the Greencastle, Bainbridge, and Russellville fire departments also responded.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What Families Can Do After a Fatal Highway Crash in Indiana

Indiana Crash Facts 2024, prepared for the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, counted 872 traffic deaths statewide in 2024. Head-on collisions made up 117 of the 827 fatal collisions in that report. The fatal collision rate on U.S. routes was 8.1 per 1,000 collisions, compared with 2.8 on local and city roads.

These steps help a family keep control of the details while the investigation is still open:

  • Ask the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office for the crash report number and the name of the deputy leading the investigation.
  • Route every insurance adjuster’s call to one family member or to a lawyer. Decline a recorded statement until the family knows where it stands.
  • Request that the family’s vehicle not go to a salvage yard until a lawyer or the family decides whether it needs to be examined.
  • Order several certified copies of the death certificate. Banks, employers, and insurers each want one.
  • Gather funeral, burial, and medical bills in one folder, along with recent pay stubs for the person who died.
  • Keep posts about the crash off social media. Insurers and defense lawyers read them.

Legal Next Steps After a Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash in Indiana

A wrongful death claim in Indiana follows a set order, and the first steps are time-sensitive.

  1. Preserve the evidence that disappears first. A lawyer can send letters asking the semi’s owner and others to keep onboard data and camera footage. Because a fire followed the crash, physical evidence can degrade quickly, so those letters go out early.
  2. Follow the investigation. The sheriff’s office hasn’t released findings or identities, and a reconstruction or charging decision can shape the claim.
  3. Identify every party and policy involved. Depending on what investigators find, that can include each driver, the semi’s owner, their insurers, and the family’s own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
  4. Name the person who files. Under IC 34-23-1-1, the personal representative of the estate brings the wrongful death claim for the benefit of surviving family members.
  5. Document the losses. Funeral and burial costs, medical bills, lost income and support, and loss of companionship can all belong in the claim, depending on who survives.
  6. Calendar the deadline. Both deaths occurred on October 12, 2026, so the two-year filing deadline under IC 34-23-1-1 falls on October 12, 2028. Missing it can end the claim.

Occupants and owners of the two additional vehicles may have their own injury or property claims, subject to the same two-year deadline.

If fault is disputed, Indiana’s modified comparative fault rule applies (IC 34-51-2-6). A claimant more than 50 percent at fault recovers nothing, and a claimant at or below that line recovers a reduced amount.
