Cass County, IN – David Ferringer, 72, Killed in Motorcycle Crash on State Road 16

David Ferringer, 72, Killed in Motorcycle Crash

Cass County, IN (October 13, 2026) – David Ferringer, 72, of Battle Ground died after his motorcycle left State Road 16 and struck a utility pole, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the crash happened at 3:18 p.m. on October 13 on State Road 16 east of County Road 525 West. A preliminary investigation determined Ferringer was driving west on a 2026 Harley-Davidson when he veered off the south side of the road. Investigators believe he continued off the roadway until the motorcycle hit a utility pole, which ejected him from the seat.

Good Samaritans stopped and tried to save Ferringer’s life before public safety personnel arrived. He died from the injuries he sustained in the crash.

The sheriff’s office said Ferringer was not wearing a helmet and that an underlying medical condition may have contributed to the crash. The investigation is continuing.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What Families Ask After a Motorcycle Crash in Cass County

Indiana recorded 136 motorcyclist deaths in 2024, and 31% of the motorcyclists killed were wearing helmets, according to Indiana Crash Facts 2024.

Who Can Be Held Responsible When a Rider Crashes Alone?

Possibly someone. Investigators look at the road, the motorcycle, and whether another vehicle played a part, and any of those can point to a responsible party.

Can the Family File a Claim After a Fatal Motorcycle Crash?

Yes, when someone else’s fault contributed. A wrongful death claim can cover losses such as funeral expenses and lost support.

Does Helmet Use Decide the Claim?

Not by itself. Indiana requires helmets only for riders under 18 and learner’s permit holders, though insurers may still argue fault.

What If the Rider Was Partly at Fault?

A claim shrinks by the rider’s share of fault and is barred above 50% (IC 34-51-2-6).

How Long Does the Family Have to File?

Two years from the date of death (IC 34-23-1-1). For this crash, that is October 13, 2028.

Early on, ask the sheriff’s office for the crash report number, keep the helmet and gear unrepaired, and ask that the motorcycle not be released or salvaged.
