Indianapolis, IN (October 29, 2026) – At 6:12 p.m. on October 29, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to a personal injury crash on the city’s southeast side. They found a juvenile boy who had been struck by a vehicle in the 6500 block of East Thompson Road, according to IMPD.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, IMPD said. According to a preliminary investigation, he had been crossing East Thompson Road from the north side of the street when a westbound driver struck him.
The driver stopped and has been cooperating with IMPD during the investigation. Per Indiana law, the driver submitted to a blood draw. IMPD said alcohol and speed were not determined to be factors.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Pedestrian Accident Law in Indiana: What Applies Here
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety counted 7,080 pedestrian deaths across the United States in 2024, based on federal crash data. The points below apply to claims after a pedestrian crash like this one.
- First steps: Ask IMPD for the crash report number and the investigator’s contact, keep clothing and belongings as they are, and route insurance calls to one person. Avoid public posts about the crash.
- Evidence: Stores, buses, and homes near the scene may have cameras. Footage is often overwritten quickly, so note where cameras are as soon as the family is able.
- Who may be liable: The driver, and anyone else responsible for the vehicle, depending on what the investigation shows. The family can ask questions before those findings are released.
- Insurance that may apply: The driver’s liability policy, and the family’s own auto policy, including uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage that insurers must make available (IC 27-7-5-2).
- Family claims: Under IC 34-23-2-1, a child’s parents generally bring the wrongful death claim for the child. An attorney can explain who may file in the family’s situation.
- Deadline: Indiana’s wrongful death statutes generally allow two years from the date of death (IC 34-23-1-1, IC 34-23-2-1), so the deadline is October 29, 2028. Missing it can end the right to bring the claim.
