Allen County, IN – Two Killed in Multi-Vehicle Semi-Truck Crash on I-69 in Construction Zone

Fort Wayne, IN - Two Killed in Multi-Vehicle Semi-Truck Crash on I-69 in Construction Zone

Allen County, IN (June 3, 2026) – Two people were killed when a semi-truck struck two stopped vehicles from behind inside a construction zone on southbound Interstate 69 yesterday, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m. and involved three semi-trucks and three passenger vehicles. Investigators said the semi-truck approached two stopped vehicles from behind within the construction zone and struck both of them. One of those vehicles went into a nearby ditch, and the other crashed into another semi-truck.

The first semi-truck’s momentum then led to a second semi-truck striking a third vehicle from behind, according to the sheriff’s department. That vehicle, in turn, struck another semi-truck in front of it.

The drivers of the first two passenger vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the first semi-truck was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.

An investigation of the crash is ongoing.

Two families are now facing a sudden, devastating loss after an ordinary afternoon drive ended on a closed stretch of interstate. When a semi-truck fails to slow for stopped traffic in a work zone, the people in smaller vehicles rarely get any chance to react.

Fatal Semi-Truck Accidents in Allen County, Indiana

A crash involving multiple semi-trucks and stopped traffic in a construction zone is one of the most complex cases in personal injury law. More than one party may share responsibility, and the evidence that proves it can disappear within days. When a truck strikes stopped vehicles from behind, attorneys and crash investigators typically look at:

  • The truck driver – speed, attention, and failure to slow for stopped or merging traffic in a posted work zone.
  • The trucking company – hiring and training practices, and federal hours-of-service limits under FMCSA regulations that guard against driver fatigue.
  • Cargo and maintenance parties – improper loading or unaddressed brake and equipment defects.
  • Work-zone traffic control – whether warning signs, lane shifts, and advance notice met the standards required for the construction zone.

Work zones change how fault is analyzed, because drivers are expected to slow and stay alert through them. Indiana follows a modified comparative fault rule, a family may still recover compensation provided their loved one was less than 51% at fault.

Indiana generally gives families two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim (IC 34-23-1-1). For a crash in June 2026, that deadline is June, 2028. One caution: if a government agency or public road contractor shares responsibility for the work zone, Indiana law can require a formal notice of claim in as little as 180 days, far sooner than the two-year deadline. Truck companies also dispatch their own investigators within hours, so preserving the trucks, their electronic data, and driver logs early can decide a case.
