Fort Wayne, IN (August 26, 2026) – A work van driver died after a Jeep traveling the wrong way on Interstate 469 struck his vehicle head-on, the Allen County Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies and medics were dispatched at approximately 1:34 p.m. on August 26 to a reported personal-injury crash on southbound I-469 near the 25.8 mile marker. Officers located the crash on southbound I-469 near the 26-mile marker, according to the sheriff’s department.
The preliminary investigation indicates a black Jeep Wrangler was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-469, the department said. A white RAM ProMaster 2500 was traveling southbound and was struck head-on by the Jeep.
The driver of the RAM ProMaster was transported to the hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced deceased at the hospital, according to the sheriff’s department. The driver of the Jeep was transported to the hospital in serious condition.
Deputies reported that the Jeep had come onto I-469 from I-69 in the opposite direction of traffic. The interstate was temporarily closed between Maplecrest Road and St. Joe Road. The sheriff’s department issued a public safety alert shortly before 2 p.m. warning drivers to avoid the area near the 26-mile marker, where construction is ongoing.
It is unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor at this time, according to the department. The driver who died has not been publicly identified.
