Indianapolis, IN - Man Dead, Woman Injured in SUV & Pickup Truck Crash on East 16th Street

Indianapolis, IN (April 9, 2026) – A man was killed, and a woman was hospitalized following a two-vehicle collision involving an SUV and a pickup truck on the east side of Indianapolis on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the crash occurred at the intersection of East 16th Street and North Shadeland Avenue. Emergency responders, including the Indianapolis Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving reports of the accident.

Upon arrival, officers located a wrecked SUV and a pickup truck. Authorities reported that a male passenger was trapped inside the SUV, requiring firefighters to extricate him from the wreckage. Both the man and a woman who was also traveling in the SUV were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Police confirmed that the man later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The identities of the victims have not been released pending family notification.

The male driver of the pickup truck was reportedly uninjured in the crash.

The events leading up to the collision remain under investigation by local authorities.

Liability in Indianapolis Intersection Collisions

Intersection crashes often involve complex investigations to determine right-of-way, traffic signal compliance, and vehicle speeds. Because Indiana follows a modified comparative fault system, an injured party or their surviving family members can pursue compensation provided they are not more than 50% responsible for the accident. Determining exactly how the crash occurred and assigning proper fault is crucial. Consulting an experienced Indianapolis car accident lawyer can help victims and their families navigate the claims process, secure important evidence like traffic camera footage, and communicate directly with insurance providers.

In cases where a collision results in a fatality, the family of the deceased may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim under Indiana law. This type of legal action allows families to recover costs associated with funeral expenses, medical bills incurred prior to death, and the loss of future earnings and companionship. It is important to act promptly, as Indiana enforces a strict two-year statute of limitations for filing both personal injury and wrongful death claims from the date of the accident. Evidence such as vehicle damage, witness statements, and electronic data must be preserved before it is lost or destroyed.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who lost his life in this tragic accident, and we wish a full recovery to the woman injured.
