St. Joseph County, IN – Five-Vehicle Crash Involving Dump Truck Shuts Down Bypass

Five-Vehicle Crash Involving Dump Truck

St. Joseph County, IN (August 24, 2026) – A five-vehicle crash involving a dump truck shut down the westbound lanes of the Bypass near State Road 331 for about two hours Monday morning, according to police.

The call came in around 8:15 a.m. reporting the crash just west of State Road 331. Police confirmed minor injuries were reported among those involved.

One of the five vehicles involved was a dump truck. Police have not released the drivers’ names or said which vehicle caused the crash.

Traffic was moving again on the westbound Bypass within about two hours. No further details have been released.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Multi-Vehicle Accidents in Indiana

A five-vehicle pileup rarely comes down to one clean story. When a commercial vehicle like a dump truck is in the mix, the company that owns it can carry separate liability from the driver.

  • See a doctor even if you feel fine at the scene, since some injuries take a day or two to show up
  • Do not give a recorded statement to any driver’s insurance company before speaking with an attorney
  • Get photos of all five vehicles and their positions before the scene is cleared
  • Do not accept a settlement before you know the full extent of your injuries

Because police have not yet said which driver caused this crash, fault may ultimately be shared. Indiana’s comparative fault law (IC 34-51-2) still allows an injured person to recover as long as they are less than 51 percent responsible.

Indiana law generally gives injury victims two years from the date of a crash to file a claim (IC 34-11-2-4). For this crash, that deadline falls on August 24, 2028.
