DeKalb County, IN – Truck Driver Airlifted After Trailer Fishtails, Causes I-69 Rollover

Truck Driver Airlifted

DeKalb County, IN (August 13, 2026) – A truck driver was airlifted to a hospital Thursday afternoon after being ejected in a rollover crash on I-69, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. near the interstate’s 333-mile marker. A preliminary investigation indicates the truck was traveling south when its trailer fishtailed and struck a guardrail, causing the truck to overturn and eject the driver.

The driver was airlifted to a local hospital for neck and abdomen injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.

All lanes between the interstate’s 329 and 334 mile markers were briefly closed before reopening one by one. By approximately 5:30 p.m., DeKalb County Central Communications confirmed all lanes were clear.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Single-Vehicle Truck Accidents in DeKalb County, Indiana

A trailer that fishtails before a rollover points investigators toward several possible causes.

  • What gets examined: tire condition, trailer load distribution, the coupling between the cab and trailer, and the roadway surface at that stretch of I-69, none of which has been released yet in this case.
  • If the driver was hauling for an employer, that relationship can open a separate path through workers’ compensation, apart from any injury claim tied to a defective part or a road hazard.
  • Indiana’s modified comparative fault rule (IC 34-51-2-6) protects an injured driver’s right to recover if a manufacturer, employer, or road authority is later found to share fault, as long as the driver is found less than 51% responsible.
  • Indiana gives an injured person two years from the date of a crash to file a personal injury claim (IC 34-11-2-4). For this crash, that deadline falls on August 13, 2028.
