Cedar Lake, IN – Hit-and-Run on West 133rd Avenue Leaves 15-Year-Old Boy Seriously Injured

Hit-and-Run on West 133rd Avenue

Cedar Lake, IN (October 15, 2026) – Just after 7:45 p.m. on October 15, a 15-year-old boy was hurt in a hit-and-run on West 133rd Avenue near Oakdale. Cedar Lake police said officers and fire officials responded.

According to police, the boy was running across West 133rd Avenue when the driver hit him and continued westbound toward Wicker Avenue. The boy was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police believe the vehicle is a KIA Soul that may be gray or silver, with damage to the front driver’s side and possibly the windshield. Police have released surveillance video, and no additional information was provided.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Hit-and-Run Claims and Uninsured Motorist Coverage in Indiana

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute’s Indiana Crash Facts 2024 report lists 26,814 hit-and-run collisions in Indiana that year, or 13.4 percent of all collisions. A driver who leaves the scene does not end an injured person’s options.

Uninsured motorist coverage on an Indiana auto policy may apply even when the driver is never found. A pedestrian’s own auto policy, or a household member’s, may be worth checking even though the pedestrian was not driving. Insurers generally expect a prompt police report.

  • First steps: Report the crash to police and write down any partial plate, vehicle color, damage, and direction of travel. Notify your own insurer about a possible uninsured motorist claim. Keep the clothing worn and note nearby cameras, since footage is overwritten quickly.
  • Who may be liable: The driver, if identified, and the vehicle’s owner. If the driver is never found, uninsured motorist coverage may be the main source of recovery. If fault is disputed, Indiana’s modified comparative fault rule allows recovery when the injured person is less than 51 percent at fault.
  • Deadline: Indiana law (IC 34-11-2-4) generally gives two years to file an injury claim. For this October 15, 2026 crash, that is October 15, 2028. Special rules can change the timing when the injured person is a minor, so ask an attorney how they apply.
