Jackson County, IN – Driver Seriously Injured in Four-Vehicle I-65 Crash

Driver Seriously Injured in Four-Vehicle I-65 Crash

Jackson County, IN (October 17, 2026) – Indiana State Police are investigating a serious four-vehicle crash on southbound I-65 that left a passenger vehicle driver with serious injuries.

According to Sgt. Stephen Wheeles of the Indiana State Police Versailles Post, officers were dispatched at 4:15 p.m. on October 17. The crash was on southbound I-65 near the 40-mile marker, between Seymour and Crothersville, in Vernon Township. A preliminary investigation found that four vehicles were involved, including two commercial vehicles. Police did not say what the other two vehicles were.

Police believe one of the commercial vehicles failed to slow down for traffic that had slowed because of construction. The Indiana Department of Transportation said a semi-truck was involved and that injuries had been reported.

Southbound lanes were closed because of the crash. All lanes reopened around 6:30 p.m., according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Commercial Vehicle Crash Law in Indiana: What Applies Here

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute’s Indiana Crash Facts 2024 report lists 17,514 large trucks, not counting pickups, involved in Indiana collisions that year. Anyone hurt in a crash like this one has several points to keep in mind.

  • First steps: Get evaluated the same day even without pain. Ask Indiana State Police for the crash report number, and write down each commercial vehicle’s carrier name and USDOT number.
  • Who may be liable: Police have not said who was at fault. That could include a driver, the carrier that employed the driver, or a company that loaded or maintained a vehicle, depending on what investigators find.
  • Evidence: Driver logs, inspection records, and electronic vehicle data are the records an attorney asks a carrier to preserve.
  • If fault is shared: Indiana’s modified comparative fault rule allows recovery when the injured person is less than 51 percent at fault.
  • Deadline: Indiana law (IC 34-11-2-4) generally gives two years to file an injury claim. For this October 17, 2026 crash, that is October 17, 2028.
  • Government notice: The construction zone could matter if it is later found to have played a part. A claim against the State of Indiana requires notice within 270 days (IC 34-13-3-6), which is July 14, 2027. Missing that notice usually ends a claim against the state.
