Shelby County, IN – Semi Overturns on I-74 in Active Construction Zone

Semi Overturns on I-74

Shelby County, IN (August 24, 2026) – A semi-tractor trailer overturned on westbound Interstate 74 near Shelbyville Monday morning, closing part of the highway through an active construction zone, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. near mile marker 117, between State Road 44 and Blue Ridge Road. INDOT traffic cameras showed the overturned trailer with a long line of stopped traffic backed up through the work zone.

Crews were able to move the trailer and reopen the road by around 9:30 a.m. The cause of the rollover, the extent of any injuries, and the driver’s condition have not yet been released.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Commercial Vehicle Rollovers in Construction Zones

What causes a semi to roll over in a work zone? Narrowed lanes, reduced speed limits, and stopped or slow traffic ahead can all play a role, and so can basic issues like cargo load or tire condition. Nothing here confirms which of those applies to this crash.

Who could be responsible? That depends on facts that have not been released. If another vehicle or a work-zone hazard contributed to the rollover, liability could extend beyond the semi’s driver.

What should happen next? Anyone involved should be seen by a doctor, even if injuries seem minor at first, and should avoid speaking with any insurance adjuster before understanding their rights.

Indiana law generally gives injury victims two years from the date of a crash to file a personal injury claim (IC 34-11-2-4). For this crash, that deadline falls on August 24, 2028.
