Madison County, IN (September 8, 2026) – State Road 13 was closed at Strawtown Avenue on September 8, 2026, after a crash involving a semi and a passenger vehicle near the Madison and Hamilton county line, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
All northbound and southbound lanes of State Road 13 were closed at Strawtown Avenue, which is 8th Street Road east of the intersection, the sheriff’s office said. An alert indicated the crash involved a semi and a passenger vehicle.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation. Personnel from Hamilton County were assisting with traffic control.
The sheriff’s office asked motorists to avoid the area and seek an alternate route so that emergency crews and investigators could work safely. The extent of injuries had not been released as of the initial alert.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Semi-Truck Accidents in Madison County, Indiana
A crash with a commercial truck is not a two-driver dispute. Several parties may share responsibility, and each one has its own insurer and its own reason to limit what it discloses.
- The truck driver, for fatigue, distraction, speed, or a failure to yield at Strawtown Avenue
- The trucking company, for hours-of-service violations, poor hiring or training, or pressure to meet delivery windows
- The maintenance contractor, if brakes, tires, or lights on the tractor or trailer were not kept in safe condition
- The cargo loader or shipper, if the load shifted or exceeded weight limits
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules govern how long the driver could be on the road, what inspections the carrier had to perform, and how long the company must keep its records. Many of those records can be lawfully destroyed after a set period, some in as little as six months.
The most important evidence sits inside the truck. The electronic logging device records driving hours. The engine control module records speed, braking, and throttle in the seconds before impact. A written preservation demand sent to the carrier stops that data from being overwritten or the truck from being put back into service.
If the passenger vehicle’s driver is accused of contributing to the crash, Indiana’s modified comparative fault rule (IC 34-51-2-6) still allows recovery as long as that driver is less than 51 percent at fault.
Personal injury claims in Indiana must generally be filed within two years of the crash (IC 34-11-2-4). For a crash on September 8, 2026, that deadline is September 8, 2028. If the crash proves fatal, a wrongful death claim carries the same two-year window under IC 34-23-1-1.

If someone you love was in the passenger vehicle on State Road 13, you may still be waiting to hear how badly they were hurt. That uncertainty is exhausting, and it is not the moment anyone wants to think about a trucking company’s insurer. But that insurer is already thinking about you.
Our Indiana motor vehicle accident lawyers have taken on commercial carriers and their insurers since 1980. One of our motor vehicle cases resolved with a $4.1 million settlement. A semi crash claim means securing the carrier’s logs, the truck’s electronic data, and the sheriff’s reconstruction before any of it goes missing.
Trucking companies often have investigators at a crash scene the same day. The electronic logging device and engine data can be overwritten within days once the tractor returns to service, so the preservation letter is the first step, not a later one.
Talking with us costs nothing, and there are no fees unless we win.
