North Vernon, IN – Christopher Johnson Dies After Falling From Golf Cart Avoiding Pothole

Christopher Johnson Dies After Falling From Golf Cart

North Vernon, IN (September 26, 2026) – A North Vernon man died after falling from a golf cart when the driver swerved to avoid a pothole in the road, according to the North Vernon Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to North Jennings Street around 6:45 p.m. on September 26, 2026, after receiving reports of the accident. Police say the golf cart driver told officers he swerved to avoid a pothole in the roadway.

As a result, the passenger, identified as Christopher Johnson of North Vernon, fell from the golf cart and suffered a severe head injury, according to police. Officers began providing emergency medical aid, including CPR, and were later assisted by Jennings County EMS and the North Vernon Fire Department.

Police requested a medical helicopter due to the severity of Johnson’s injuries. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital to meet the medical flight crew, but died before he could be transported.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Who Is Liable for a Pothole-Related Crash in Indiana

North Jennings Street falls under the City of North Vernon’s street department, which carries a duty to maintain the roadway in reasonably safe condition and to address known hazards within a reasonable time. Whether that duty was met here is a question an investigation can answer, not something the initial police report settles.

  • What a dangerous-condition claim requires: proof the pothole existed, that the city knew or should have known about it, and that the city had a reasonable opportunity to repair or warn of it and did not
  • Evidence that matters: prior complaint records, work-order history for North Jennings Street, past crash reports at the same location, and photographs of the pothole before any repair crew arrives
  • Driver and passenger claims: the golf cart driver and Johnson’s family may each have separate legal questions to sort through depending on how the facts develop

Indiana law requires a formal notice of claim against a political subdivision like the City of North Vernon within 180 days of the incident (IC 34-13-3-8). For this crash, that notice deadline falls on March 25, 2027, far sooner than the two-year window that otherwise applies to a wrongful death claim (IC 34-23-1-1). Missing the 180-day notice usually ends any claim against the city before it can begin.

Nobody expects a short golf cart ride down a familiar street to end this way, and the Johnson family now has to make sense of a loss that started with nothing more than a pothole.

Our Indiana wrongful death attorneys have pursued claims against cities and counties for dangerous road conditions, work that requires moving fast because government notice deadlines run far shorter than ordinary filing windows.

Photographs of the pothole, the city’s maintenance and complaint records, and the golf cart itself are all pieces of evidence that can disappear once a repair crew comes through, so acting early protects the case.
