I-74 Closed for Hours After Two-Semi Truck Crash

Shelby County, IN (September 30, 2026) – A crash involving two semi-trucks shut down eastbound Interstate 74 in Shelby County for more than two hours Wednesday morning, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The crash happened around 5:15 a.m. near mile marker 122.5, about two miles east of Shelbyville and just north of the State Road 244 exit. All eastbound lanes were closed while crews worked the scene, and traffic was diverted off the interstate at exit 119. The lanes reopened just after 7:40 a.m.

The extent of any injuries has not been released. The crash remains under investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Semi-Truck Accidents in Indiana

  • Commercial truck crashes often involve multiple parties, including the drivers, trucking companies, and cargo loaders, each of whom may bear some responsibility depending on what investigators find.
  • Federal and state trucking regulations govern driver hours, vehicle maintenance, and cargo securement, and violations can be central to establishing liability in a truck accident claim.
  • Evidence such as black box data, driver logs, and maintenance records can be critical to a claim, but trucking companies are not always required to preserve it indefinitely, so acting quickly matters.
  • Indiana’s statute of limitations for a personal injury claim is two years from the date of the crash, which puts the deadline at September 30, 2028, for anyone injured in this collision.
