Angola, IN – Five Semis Collide on Toll Road, Two Drivers Injured

Five Semis Collide on Toll Road

Angola, IN (September 14, 2026) – Two truck drivers suffered minor injuries after a semi crashed into slowed construction-zone traffic on the Indiana Toll Road, setting off a collision involving five semis in total, according to Indiana State Police.

The crash happened around 10:40 p.m. on I-80/90 eastbound, about four miles east of Fremont near the Angola Motor Speedway. ISP said traffic was slowed and merging for a construction site near the Eastpoint Toll Plaza when a semi driver failed to notice the slowdown and crashed into the back of the line, striking four other semis.

The impact caused a trailer’s cargo, thousands of cans of green beans, to scatter across the roadway before several of the trucks caught fire. Officials said some of the semis were melted together in the aftermath.

Two of the drivers involved were treated for minor injuries and have since been released from the hospital. Traffic was diverted at Exit 144, the Angola Plaza, while crews worked through a lengthy cleanup, with officials estimating the diversion would last until at least 8 a.m.

Semi-Truck Accidents on Indiana Highways

  • Get checked by a doctor promptly, even for injuries described as minor. Impact injuries from a multi-truck collision can worsen over the following days.
  • Avoid speaking with any trucking company’s insurance adjuster before consulting an attorney, especially when multiple carriers may each try to shift blame to the others.
  • Preserve the lead truck’s driver logs, dispatch records, and any onboard telematics data now. Construction-zone approach speed and following distance are often central to how fault gets assigned in a rear-end pileup like this one.
  • Don’t sign anything or accept an early settlement offer before liability among the five trucking companies has been sorted out.

A commercial driver’s failure to notice slowed traffic ahead of a marked construction zone points toward driver attention and following distance as central questions in the investigation. With five separate semis and, potentially, five separate trucking companies involved, liability can be contested and spread across more than one party. Indiana’s modified comparative fault rule still allows an injured driver to recover damages as long as they were less than 51% at fault, and Indiana law generally gives injury victims two years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury claim (IC 34-11-2-4).

Five trucks colliding on a toll road construction zone is the kind of crash where sorting out who’s responsible takes real investigation, not a quick phone call from an insurance adjuster.
