Clinton County, IN – Ismael Velasco Juarez, 26, of Indianapolis, Dies in Van Rollover on I-65 After Trailer Detaches

Passenger Dies in Early Morning Van Rollover

Clinton County, Indiana (October 1, 2026) – Ismael Velasco Juarez, 26, of Indianapolis, died after a van rolled on northbound Interstate 65, according to the Indiana State Police. The crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. on October 1. It was near the 157-mile marker and the State Road 28 interchange for Attica and Frankfort.

Police say the 2012 Chevrolet Express van was traveling northbound in the right lane when the trailer became detached. The van then left the roadway and entered the east side ditch, according to the Indiana State Police. It rolled and came to rest on its side.

Velasco Juarez was believed not to be wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the van, police say. He died at the scene, according to state police. A drone with thermal optics found his body northwest of the vehicle, police said. Five people were in the van, and the driver was not injured.

The Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating. Several local agencies assisted, including the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, the Frankfort Police Department, and the Clinton County Coroner’s Office. The Colfax Fire Department and Clinton County EMS also responded.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

What to Do After a Fatal Rollover Crash in Indiana

A crash that begins with a trailer coming loose can involve more than one party. The state police findings will shape what a family can learn, so the first weeks matter.

  • Who may be liable: the driver, the owner of the van or the trailer, anyone who hitched or maintained the trailer, or a manufacturer if a part failed
  • What investigators and attorneys examine: the hitch and coupling, safety chains, trailer condition, the load, and inspection and repair records
  • What to preserve: the van, the trailer, the hitch hardware, photographs, and any records of who owned and serviced them
  • Do not give a recorded statement to an insurance company before speaking with a lawyer

Fault has not been determined, and a news report does not decide it. Indiana follows a modified comparative fault rule, so a family may still recover when the person who died is found less than 51% at fault.

This crash occurred on October 1, 2026. Indiana wrongful death claims must generally be filed within two years of the date of death (IC 34-23-1-1). That puts the deadline at October 1, 2028. Which Indiana wrongful death statute applies depends on who died, so a lawyer should confirm that early.
