Fort Wayne, IN (September 24, 2026) – A 24-year-old Fort Wayne woman died after being trapped in her car when it was struck from behind on northbound I-69, according to police.
Police said the crash happened Thursday night, September 24, on northbound I-69 between the Coldwater Road and Lima Road exits.
Officers said a car was stopped in the northbound lanes with no lights activated when another car struck it from behind.
The driver of the car that was struck was trapped inside the vehicle. After being extricated, she was taken to an area hospital, where she later died.
One man, another woman, and a child who were also involved were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
On September 28, the Allen County Coroner’s Office identified the woman who died as 24-year-old Yamasia Monae McLemor of Fort Wayne. Her death was ruled an accident.
Investigators said they believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. The case remains under investigation.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Fatal Car Accidents in Indiana
A rear-end crash on a highway raises questions that go beyond the point of impact.
- Who may be liable: the driver of the car that struck the stopped vehicle from behind, especially if alcohol use is confirmed
- What investigators examine: toxicology results, the following driver’s speed and reaction time, and why the stopped vehicle’s lights weren’t on
- Indiana’s modified comparative fault rule matters here, since a vehicle stopped without lights on an interstate can raise fault questions for both drivers, as long as fault stays under 51% for recovery
- Wrongful death claims in Indiana generally must be filed within two years of the date of death (IC 34-23-1-1), which puts the deadline at September 24, 2028
