Gibson County, IN (September 26, 2026) – Just after 4 a.m., a head-on crash on Interstate 64 left one person dead and three others seriously injured, according to the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office.
First responders were dispatched to I-64 near the 29-mile marker around 4:10 a.m. on September 26, 2026, after witnesses reported the crash. According to the sheriff’s office, a white Jeep Liberty traveling west crossed the grass median and struck an eastbound black pickup truck head-on.
One person died at the scene before emergency personnel arrived, deputies said. Another occupant of the Jeep and two occupants of the pickup truck were extricated from the wreckage and taken to the hospital with severe injuries.
The Gibson County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the person killed at a later time. The crash remains under investigation.
Fatal Car Accidents in Indiana
A head-on crash on an interstate leaves little time to react, and it often leaves families with as many questions as the physical damage itself.
- Cause determination: crash reconstruction can establish why a vehicle left its lane, whether from a medical event, fatigue, distraction, or another factor
- Multiple claims: each injured occupant of the truck, along with the surviving occupant of the Jeep, may have a separate claim depending on how fault is ultimately assigned
- Comparative fault: Indiana follows a modified comparative fault rule, so a person found partly responsible can still recover as long as their share stays under 51 percent (IC 34-51-2-6)
- Insurance layers: highway crashes involving two vehicles often draw on multiple policies, including underinsured motorist coverage where the at-fault driver’s limits fall short
Indiana’s wrongful death statute generally requires a claim to be filed within two years of the date of death (IC 34-23-1-1). Here, that deadline falls on September 26, 2028. The same two-year window applies to the injury claims of the surviving occupants (IC 34-11-2-4).

A crash this serious changes four families’ lives at once, and no two of them are dealing with the same set of losses this morning.
Our Indiana car accident attorneys have represented clients through some of the state’s most serious highway collisions, building cases on accident reconstruction and the medical records that document what a family has lost.
Skid marks, vehicle debris, and the vehicles themselves hold information that fades fast once a highway reopens to traffic, so an early investigation matters here.
We take these cases on contingency, with no upfront cost and no fee unless we win.
