Hit-and-Run Accident Rights in Indianapolis and Hancock County, Indiana
Hit-and-run crashes are among the most devastating and legally complex accidents on Indiana roads. When a driver flees the scene after causing a fatal injury, surviving family members may feel they have no legal options, but that is not always the case. Indiana law allows families to pursue compensation through uninsured motorist coverage when the at-fault driver cannot be immediately identified. Indiana requires drivers to carry minimum auto insurance, and UM/UIM coverage can serve as a critical safety net for victims of hit-and-run collisions while investigators work to identify the responsible party.
Under Indiana’s Wrongful Death Act, surviving family members including spouses, children, and dependent parents may seek compensation for funeral costs, lost financial support, and loss of companionship. Time is a critical factor in these cases. Evidence such as surveillance footage, tire tracks, and witness accounts can disappear quickly, and Indiana’s statute of limitations gives families two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim. Consulting an Indiana car accident lawyer serving Indianapolis and the surrounding region as soon as possible can help families preserve evidence and protect their legal rights during an already painful time.
