Indianapolis, IN (September 26, 2026) – Indiana State Police has been asked to investigate a crash that followed a police chase on the east side of Indianapolis, according to an ISP spokesperson.
The spokesperson told reporters that a police chase ended in a serious bodily injury crash in the 4800 block of Southeastern Avenue around 1:40 p.m. on September 26, 2026. Everyone involved in the crash was transported to area hospitals in critical condition, the spokesperson said, though police did not specify how many people were hurt or where the chase began.
Investigators are still working to determine the circumstances that led up to the crash. A crash reconstructionist was called to the scene to assist. Police closed part of Southeastern Avenue during the investigation and later reopened the road.
No additional details have been released. This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Car Accidents Involving Police Pursuits in Indiana
When a chase ends in a crash, more than one party can end up sharing responsibility. Fault can rest with the driver who fled, but it can also extend to how the pursuit itself was conducted, depending on the policies the responding department followed.
- Pursuit policy review: whether the department’s chase complied with its own guidelines for speed, distance, and when to terminate a pursuit
- Driver conduct: the actions of every vehicle involved in the moments leading up to impact
- Comparative fault: Indiana law allows recovery even when a person is partly at fault, as long as that share stays below 51 percent (IC 34-51-2-6)
- Medical documentation: critical-condition injuries generate significant early treatment costs that a claim needs to account for from the start
Indiana’s personal injury statute of limitations generally gives an injured person two years from the date of the crash to file a claim (IC 34-11-2-4). For this crash, that deadline falls on September 26, 2028.

Every person hospitalized tonight has a family waiting on word from a doctor, not yet knowing what the coming weeks will look like.
Our Indiana car accident attorneys dig into pursuit policies and crash reconstruction evidence to determine who actually bears responsibility when a chase goes wrong, something insurance adjusters rarely volunteer on their own.
Dash camera and body camera footage from a pursuit is often retained on a short cycle, so the earlier that footage is requested, the better the odds it still exists when a claim is built.
The clock on a claim like this starts running now, and waiting only narrows the options available later.
