Merrillville, IN (October 7, 2026) – Two people were transported to hospitals after an Amazon semi truck crashed into a bridge overpass on northbound I-65 near 73rd Avenue, according to Indiana State Police.
The crash happened at about 7:50 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-65 at 73rd Avenue in Merrillville, Indiana State Police from the Lowell district reported. Corp. Melinda Lahr said the crash involved an Amazon semi-truck and a car.
The semi truck struck the 73rd Avenue overpass. Photos shared by Indiana State Police showed the Amazon truck over a metal guardrail and smashed into a bridge pillar. A black sedan with heavy damage was also at the scene, with debris across the roadway.
The semi truck driver was transported to a hospital. The car driver was also transported to a nearby hospital for observation, according to Corp. Lahr. Indiana State Police said one of the people hurt had to be flown out by helicopter.
Indiana State Police said the truck driver did not appear to be at fault. All northbound lanes of I-65 were blocked as crews worked the scene. No reopening time was set. Traffic backed up from 61st Avenue to 101st Avenue in Lake County.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Truck Accident Liability on Indiana Interstates
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations require commercial truck drivers to follow strict hours-of-service rules, maintain pre-trip inspection logs, and keep their vehicles in safe operating condition. When a crash involves a commercial carrier like Amazon, investigators examine driver logs, the carrier’s maintenance records, and the truck’s electronic control module data alongside the physical evidence at the scene.
Indiana State Police said the truck driver did not appear to be at fault in this crash. When that is the finding, liability may shift to the driver of the other vehicle, or the investigation may identify a road condition, mechanical issue, or third-party factor. The car driver or any passenger may still have a claim depending on how the crash occurred.
- Preserve the evidence early. Write down the carrier name and USDOT number from the cab door. Note any company dashcam. Record the trailer and plate numbers. Request the crash report number from Indiana State Police.
- Who may be liable. Depending on the investigation, liability could fall on a driver, the trucking company, a maintenance provider, or a vehicle manufacturer. Indiana’s modified comparative fault rule (IC 34-51-2-6) reduces recovery by the injured person’s share of fault and bars recovery when that share exceeds 50 percent.
- Filing deadline. Under IC 34-11-2-4, the deadline to file a personal injury claim from this crash is October 7, 2028.
