Carroll County, IN (October 13, 2026) – A truck driver was airlifted to a hospital after a crash at the intersection of State Roads 218 and 25 in Carroll County, according to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were called to the intersection around 6:52 a.m.
When deputies arrived, they found a van with heavy damage and a semi on fire. The sheriff’s office said the semi overturned, slid down a steep embankment, and caught fire. The semi was hauling garbage, and the trash spilled across the roadway and a ditch.
Deputies later confirmed that the semi was occupied only by its driver. The driver reportedly sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. The van’s driver became entrapped, was extricated, and sustained minor injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
After a preliminary investigation, deputies determined that the van’s driver was trying to cross State Road 218 at State Road 25. The driver pulled into the semi’s path, resulting in a collision. The van’s driver told deputies that they did not see the semi before pulling into the intersection.
Cleanup took hours because of the spilled trash. The intersection did not reopen until 3:15 p.m.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
After a Semi Crash in Carroll County: What the Numbers Show and What to Do
Indiana Crash Facts 2024, prepared for the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, counted 27,382 right-angle collisions statewide in 2024, and 166 of them were fatal. Large trucks, excluding pickups, accounted for 17,514 vehicles in Indiana collisions that year, about 5% of the total.
Anyone hurt in a commercial truck crash can start with these steps:
- Get the crash report number from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.
- Report the injury to your employer right away, and ask for the incident paperwork in writing.
- Ask that any dashcam footage and the truck’s onboard data be kept.
- Photograph injuries as they heal, and keep every medical record and bill.
- Hold off on recorded statements to any insurer until you have talked with an attorney.
Legal Next Steps After a Semi Crash in Indiana
A claim after an intersection crash with a commercial truck moves in a set order.
- Preserve the evidence that disappears first. A preservation letter asks the van’s owner and insurer to keep the van and its recorded data. The fire makes early action more important.
- Get the full crash report and any reconstruction. The sheriff’s office has reported a preliminary finding, and the final report may refine it.
- Identify every policy and responsible party. That can include the van driver’s liability coverage, the van’s owner, an employer if the van was used for work, and the trucking company’s coverage.
- Sort out workers’ compensation. A truck driver hurt on the job may receive those benefits. A separate claim against another driver can run alongside them, though the comp insurer may have a right to repayment.
- Document the losses: medical treatment, lost income, and future care.
- Calendar the deadline. The crash happened on October 13, 2026, so the two-year filing deadline under IC 34-11-2-4 falls on October 13, 2028.
The sheriff’s office placed the van in the semi’s path as a preliminary finding. Indiana’s modified comparative fault rule (IC 34-51-2-6) still weighs every driver’s share. A claimant more than 50 percent at fault recovers nothing, and below that line recovery is reduced.
