Tippecanoe County, IN (October 23, 2026) – The intersection of US Highway 231 South and Veterans Memorial Parkway, just outside Lafayette, was the scene of a crash that killed a motorcyclist, according to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash was reported shortly before 11 a.m. on October 23. The sheriff’s office said a preliminary investigation indicated that a southbound Hyundai, driven by a 35-year-old from Oxford, Indiana, failed to yield to a northbound motorcycle as the car turned east onto Veterans Memorial Parkway.
The motorcyclist, believed to be a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said her office is working on a legal identification, and an autopsy will be scheduled.
The Hyundai driver was not injured. The sheriff’s office said drugs and/or alcohol are not suspected. The crash remains under investigation.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Failure-to-Yield Crashes Involving Motorcycles in Indiana
The Indiana University Public Policy Institute’s Indiana Crash Facts 2024 reported 136 motorcyclist deaths in Indiana in 2024. When a driver turns across a rider’s path, the claim often depends on right of way and on whether the driver saw the motorcycle.
The sheriff’s office described its finding in this crash as preliminary, so fault is not settled. The full crash report, witness accounts, and any vehicle data will matter.
- First steps: Ask the sheriff’s office for the crash report, and ask that the motorcycle, helmet, and gear be kept exactly as they are. Photograph the intersection and the sight lines if the family can.
- Who may be liable: The Hyundai driver, if the evidence confirms the preliminary finding, and any other party whose conduct or equipment contributed to the crash.
- Comparative fault: Indiana recovery is barred only if the rider is found 51 percent or more at fault. Insurers often push that argument against riders, so the evidence matters early.
- Deadline: Wrongful death claims in Indiana must generally be filed within two years of the date of death (IC 34-23-1-1), which makes the deadline October 23, 2028. The estate may also have a survival claim.
