White County, IN – Two Killed After Semi Crosses I-65 Median and Strikes Another Semi

Two Killed After Semi Crosses I-65

White County, IN (October 14, 2026) – Indiana State Police said two people died and a third was taken to a hospital after a semi-truck crossed the median on Interstate 65 in White County and struck another semi.

Troopers responded just before 4 p.m. on October 14 to the crash near the 194-mile marker, which the Indiana Department of Transportation placed near the U.S. 231 exit. A preliminary investigation indicates a semi was traveling north in the left lane when, for reasons still under investigation, it left the roadway, entered the median, and crossed into the southbound lanes.

Another semi was traveling south in the left lane at that moment. State police said the northbound semi struck the southbound semi, and both vehicles came to rest blocking the southbound lanes.

Two people died at the scene despite life-saving efforts, and a third person was taken to a hospital for treatment, state police said. Police did not confirm whether the drivers of the semis were the people who died. Names will be released after positive identification and notification of next of kin.

State police expected I-65 to stay closed for several hours. Troopers from the Lafayette and Lowell posts, the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, and other agencies worked the scene, and state police thanked a bystander who stopped and gave first responders critical information.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Who May Be Liable After a Semi-Truck Crash on an Indiana Interstate

Large trucks, not counting pickups, made up 17,514 of the vehicles in Indiana crashes in 2024, or 5%, and running off the road accounted for 29% of fatal collisions, according to the Indiana University Public Policy Institute’s Indiana Crash Facts 2024.

When a semi leaves its lane, responsibility can reach past the driver. The carrier, the truck’s owner, a cargo loader, or a maintenance company may share it, and hours-of-service logs, inspection files, and electronic control module data can help show why a truck left its lane. Those records sit with companies, so asking that they be preserved early matters.

After a death, the family may be able to bring a wrongful death claim, and anyone hurt in the crash may have a separate injury claim.

  • First steps: Ask state police for the crash report number and the investigating unit’s contact, and ask that the vehicles and their data not be released or salvaged yet.
  • Who may be liable: The driver, the carrier, the vehicle’s owner, a cargo loader, or a maintenance company, depending on what investigators find.
  • Deadline: Indiana generally allows two years from the date of death for a wrongful death claim (IC 34-23-1-1) and two years for an injury claim (IC 34-11-2-4), which here means October 14, 2028. A claimant found more than 50% at fault is barred from recovery (IC 34-51-2-6).
