One person was treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured.
The Friendship Volunteer Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Ripley County EMS, and Ripley County Communications assisted. Reports so far do not say what caused the crash, which vehicles were involved, or how seriously the person taken to the hospital was hurt.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Steps to Take After a Two-Vehicle Collision in Cross Plains, IN

Pain from a crash can surface hours or days later, so the first steps matter for both your health and your records.
- Get checked by a doctor within a day or two, even if you felt fine at the scene or were released from the hospital.
- Ask the responding officer for the crash report number, and note which agency took the report.
- Photograph both vehicles, the intersection, and any visible injuries before the vehicles are repaired or sold.
- Collect names and phone numbers for witnesses, plus the other driver’s insurance details.
- Report the crash to your own insurer promptly, and decline a recorded statement for the other driver’s insurer until you know your options.
- Write down what you remember while it is fresh, including each vehicle’s direction of travel and what you saw just before impact.
- Keep medical bills, missed-work notes, and repair estimates in one place.
Two-Vehicle Crash Claims in Indiana: Five Common Questions
Who can be held responsible for a two-vehicle crash in Indiana?
The driver whose negligence caused the crash. If that driver was working at the time, the employer may share responsibility as well.
Can I still recover if no one has said who caused the crash?
Yes. A claim rests on evidence, not on a police conclusion. Crash reports, photos, witness accounts, and vehicle data can establish fault later.
What if I was partly at fault?
Indiana follows modified comparative fault under IC 34-51-2-6. Your recovery is reduced by your share of fault and barred if that share is greater than 50 percent.
How long do I have to file a claim in Indiana?
Two years from the crash. This crash happened on October 13, 2026, so the deadline under IC 34-11-2-4 is October 13, 2028.
What if the other driver had little or no insurance?
Your own policy may include uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, which can pay when the at-fault driver’s limits fall short. Check your declarations page or ask your agent which coverage you carry.
