Evansville, IN (July 3, 2026) – The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office says it is investigating a deadly motor vehicle crash that occurred on the evening of July 3 on Interstate 69 near South Green River Road. Two people died in the crash.
At approximately 9:15 p.m., deputies, along with officers from the Evansville Police Department and conservation officers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, responded to a report of a crash with injuries on northbound I-69 near the South Green River Road exit. Upon arrival, deputies located two individuals in the roadway suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries.
Evansville Fire Department personnel immediately provided lifesaving measures to both individuals; however, both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicates a motorcycle traveling northbound on I-69 was involved in a single-vehicle crash. A passing motorist stopped to check on the motorcycle rider, activated his vehicle’s hazard lights, and exited his vehicle.
A third vehicle, also traveling northbound, reported moving into the left lane to avoid the stopped vehicle. That vehicle subsequently became involved in a secondary collision with both the motorcyclist and the driver who had stopped to render aid.
Sheriff’s Office crash reconstructionists and detectives responded to assist with the investigation. A deputy certified as a Drug Recognition Expert evaluated the driver of the third vehicle. Although drugs and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors, a blood sample was obtained and will be submitted to the Indiana State Police Laboratory for testing.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under active investigation.
Two families lost someone on the same stretch of interstate within minutes, one a rider, the other a man who stopped so a stranger would not be alone on the road. Crashes like this leave behind legal questions as tangled as the scene itself, and they deserve straight answers.
What to Do After the Fatal I-69 Crash in Evansville, IN
If you lost a loved one in this crash, the days ahead will bring paperwork, phone calls, and decisions no one should have to make while grieving. Here is what you need to know.
How do you get the crash report in Vanderburgh County?
The official report is filed by the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and is typically available within days through the records division or buycrash.com. You are entitled to a copy, and it is the starting document for any Indiana wrongful death claim.
What happens with the Coroner’s Office?
The Vanderburgh County Coroner will contact you directly as next of kin before any identities are released publicly. You can request the coroner’s report, and you should keep every document you receive, including funeral and transport invoices, which are recoverable in a claim.
Should you talk to the insurance company?
No. Do not give a recorded statement or accept any early payment. Insurers often reach out within days of a fatal crash, and anything you say can be used to reduce what you are owed. It is always okay to say “our attorney will contact you.”
Why does evidence need to be preserved now?
The vehicles, the third car’s electronic crash data, and any dashcam footage can be lost or destroyed within weeks. A preservation letter from an attorney stops that. Toxicology results and the final crash report may take months, and your civil claim does not need to wait for either.
How long do you have to file a wrongful death claim in Indiana?
Indiana allows you two years from the date of death (IC 34-23-1-1). For this crash, that deadline is July 3, 2028. A consultation costs you nothing and starts no obligation.
