Fort Wayne, IN (September 9, 2026) – Allen County Sheriff’s deputies and Indiana State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 69 that left one person dead and two others injured, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responded to I-69 near the exit for Union Chapel Road at approximately 7:26 a.m. Wednesday, near the 318 mile marker.
When officers and medics arrived, they found a red Chevrolet Impala off the roadway on the west side of the interstate. Three occupants were removed from the vehicle and taken to a hospital. The front-seat passenger was initially reported in critical condition, a second passenger had life-threatening injuries, and a third passenger’s injuries were not life-threatening.
After arriving at the hospital, one of the passengers died from their injuries.
A preliminary investigation indicated the vehicle was traveling southbound on I-69 when it left the roadway for reasons that have not been determined. The vehicle struck a sign and continued off the road before hitting several trees, according to the sheriff’s department.
The crash remains under investigation. The Allen County coroner’s office is expected to release the deceased passenger’s identity after an autopsy and notification of next of kin.
