Hammond, IN – ISP Investigates I-94 Semi Crash That Left Driver Critically Injured

ISP Investigates I-94 Semi Crash

Hammond, IN (August 31, 2026) – Indiana State Police responded to a crash between a semi-truck and a car hauler carrying several vehicles on eastbound Interstate 94 near Kennedy Avenue. One person was airlifted from the scene by medical helicopter with critical injuries. Both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-94 were closed initially for the response. Westbound lanes have since reopened, and eastbound traffic is moving through a single open lane. ISP said what caused the crash was not immediately clear.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Semi-Truck Accidents in Indiana

When a commercial truck crash leaves someone critically hurt, responsibility does not always stop with the driver behind the wheel.

  • Who may be liable: the truck driver, the trucking company, the company responsible for loading or securing the car hauler’s cargo, or a maintenance provider
  • What investigators and attorneys examine: the truck’s black box and telematics data, driver logs and dispatch records, hours-of-service compliance, cargo securement, and maintenance history
  • Commercial drivers and carriers operate under federal safety rules set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, covering hours of service, vehicle condition, and cargo securement
  • See a doctor promptly, even for injuries that do not seem serious at first
  • Avoid giving a recorded statement to the trucking company’s insurer before speaking with an attorney
  • Preserve what you can from the scene, including photos and any visible DOT or USDOT numbers on the truck

Indiana follows a modified comparative fault rule, meaning a person found more than 51 percent at fault cannot recover compensation. Under Indiana law, injury claims generally must be filed within two years of the crash. For this crash, that deadline is August 31, 2028.

Waking up to news that someone you love was airlifted off a highway is one of the hardest kinds of uncertainty there is, and it does not get easier once more details start to arrive.

Our Indiana car accident lawyer team has represented people hurt in crashes involving commercial trucks and knows how quickly a trucking company’s own investigators move once a wreck like this happens.

A truck’s black box data, driver logs, and dispatch records can be lost or overwritten within days, so a preservation request often needs to go out before the wreckage is even cleared from the shoulder.

We work on contingency, so there is nothing to pay upfront and nothing owed unless we recover for you.
