Lawrence, IN – Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash, Driver Detained Nearby

fatal hit-and-run

Lawrence, IN (August 1, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash near Pendleton Pike and East 46th Street left a man dead early Saturday morning, the Lawrence Police Department said.

Officers responded just before 2:30 a.m. on the morning of August 1 to reports of a collision. They found two heavily damaged vehicles at the scene. One was empty. An unresponsive man was trapped inside the other.

The Lawrence Fire Department and paramedics determined the man died from injuries he suffered in the crash, according to police reports.

Police searched the area and found a person walking less than a mile from the scene. Officers held that person after noticing injuries consistent with the crash, including bleeding from the eye and arm and multiple scratches. The person was later detained after admitting to being involved in the collision, police said.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

A crash that takes a life is hard enough without also learning that the other driver tried to leave before help arrived.

Fatal Hit-and-Run Crashes in Indiana

A driver who leaves the scene of a fatal crash still faces a civil claim from the family left behind, separate from whatever criminal charges follow.

  • Liability generally falls on the driver who caused the crash and fled, even when that driver is identified and detained later rather than caught at the scene
  • Investigators typically review witness statements, nearby surveillance or dashcam footage, and physical evidence from both vehicles to reconstruct how the collision happened
  • A wrongful death claim moves on its own timeline and does not have to wait for a criminal conviction before it proceeds
  • Indiana law generally gives a family two years from the date of death to file a claim, and an Indiana wrongful death attorney can start preserving evidence long before that deadline arrives

For this crash, that deadline falls on August 1, 2028.
