Indianapolis, IN - Six Injured in Chain-Reaction Crash on I-65 in Greenwood, One in Critical Condition

Indianapolis, IN (May 8, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 near Greenwood left six people injured Saturday morning. One victim remained in critical but stable condition after being transported to a local hospital, according to Indiana State Police. One victim remained in critical but stable condition after being transported to a local hospital, according to Indiana State Police.

The collision happened near the 99 mile marker along I-65, close to the Main Street interchange in Greenwood. Four vehicles were involved in total. Five additional people were taken to hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The crash began when a driver failed to stop for a trooper who attempted a traffic stop approximately 25 miles south of Greenwood, police say. The trooper was investigating alleged speeding and license plate violations. A pursuit followed.

As the suspect vehicle approached the 99 mile marker, the driver moved onto the shoulder to pass traffic, struck another car, and set off a chain-reaction crash involving three other vehicles, according to ISP.

The driver of the SUV was taken into custody following the crash and later transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, state police say.
The investigation remains ongoing. State police have not released the suspect’s name pending formal charges.

When innocent drivers and passengers are caught in a crash caused by someone fleeing police, the injuries are real. So are the legal options. Here is what victims and their families in Indiana need to know.

Multi-Vehicle Crashes Involving Police Pursuits in Indiana

Pursuit-related crashes raise legal issues that go beyond a standard car accident claim. Multiple parties may carry legal responsibility. Identifying all of them early is critical.

Who can be held responsible?

  • The fleeing driver. Anyone who causes a crash while evading police faces direct civil liability for the harm done to uninvolved motorists. A criminal case running separately does not bar a civil claim.
  • The government agency. Indiana law allows injured third parties to bring civil claims against a government agency when a pursuit is conducted negligently. Courts examine factors including the danger posed, road conditions, traffic volume, and whether the pursuit followed department policy. Indiana’s Tort Claims Act includes immunity provisions that can affect whether a claim against a government agency is viable. An attorney needs to evaluate the specific facts before concluding this avenue is available.
  • Other insurance coverage. All vehicles involved may carry applicable coverage. Identifying every available policy is one of the first steps a personal injury attorney will take on your behalf.

What should injured victims do now?

  • Seek all necessary medical treatment and document every visit, diagnosis, and prescription from the day of the crash forward.
  • Do not provide recorded statements to any insurance company, including your own, before speaking with an attorney.
  • Do not repair or sell your vehicle until it has been documented and inspected.
  • Request the police report from ISP as soon as it becomes available. Pursuit logs and trooper communications can become important evidence later.
  • Contact an attorney as soon as possible. Evidence in multi-vehicle crashes deteriorates quickly.

What is Indiana’s deadline to file?

Under Indiana law, injured victims generally have two years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury claim (IC 34-11-2-4). The clock starts on the date of the crash, not the date charges are filed. An attorney can confirm the specific deadline that applies to your situation.
