Indiana’s Most Dangerous Roads: I-90 Wrecks In Lake County

In this ongoing series examining the most dangerous roads in Indiana, the focus now shifts to Northwest Indiana. The Indiana Department of Transportation’s (INDOT) latest Five Percent Report repeatedly lists roads in Lake County as among the most dangerous in the state.

Lake County is home of the Borman Expressway, which consists of Interstate 80/94. This expressway contains some of the most backed-up interstate miles in the state. An article written by The Times of Northwest Indiana reports, “It’s comparable with the Indianapolis area,” said INDOT spokesman Joshua Bingham. “Those are the two most congested areas of the state.”

Many of the accidents that occur on the Borman Expressway and similar roads throughout the state and country involve semi trucks and other large vehicles. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), around 500,000 trucking accidents take place every year in America. Of these, about 5,000 trucking accidents result in fatalities. In fact, one out of every eight traffic deaths is caused by a trucking collision.

The FMCSA reports the following trucking accident scenarios as those that most often result in fatalities or injuries:

  • Trucks hitting pedestrians.
  • Collisions between a large truck and one or more smaller passenger vehicles.
  • Loss of control of the truck due to tire blow out, vehicle failure, weather conditions or another factor.
  • Animal in roadway.
  • Drivers causing an accident due to general negligence, using a mobile phone, falling asleep behind the wheel, a medical emergency or another careless or reckless behavior.
