Austin, IN (Dec 28, 2025) – A 35-year-old Seymour man was killed late Sunday night after being struck by two separate vehicles on Interstate 65 in Scott County.
Indiana State Police reported that the incident began around 11:25 p.m. near the 35-mile marker southbound.
Initially, a Volvo semi-truck driver contacted 911, believing they had grazed a pedestrian on the fog line. A second caller, shortly after, reported that their Ford Escape had struck a pedestrian approximately half a mile north of the first location.
The investigation revealed that after Bryce Allen Sheaffer was initially grazed by the semi, he walked northbound into oncoming traffic, where he was struck by the Ford Escape.
Mr. Sheaffer was rushed to Scott Memorial Hospital in Scottsburg, but tragically passed away from his injuries.
Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, which found that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash. Southbound lanes were closed until 4 a.m. Monday.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Bryce Allen Sheaffer during this incredibly difficult time.
Pedestrian Accidents in Indiana, IN
Pedestrian accidents on major interstates like I-65, I-70, and I-465 are often catastrophic due to high vehicle speeds and limited visibility.
Under Indiana Code § 34-11-2-4, the statute of limitations for filing a wrongful death or personal injury claim is generally two years from the date of the incident.
However, if a collision involves a government-owned vehicle or issues with roadway lighting and maintenance, a formal Tort Claim Notice must be filed within as little as 180 to 270 days.
In complex cases involving multiple vehicles, identifying the specific cause of fatal injuries is essential for securing a fair recovery.
In the aftermath of a pedestrian tragedy, you must act quickly to secure evidence such as dashcam footage, witness statements, and “black box” data from the vehicles involved. Because Indiana follows a modified comparative negligence rule, insurance companies may attempt to shift blame to the pedestrian to avoid liability.
If your loved ones have been involved in a serious pedestrian accident or wrongful death cases in the state, our Indiana personal injury lawyer is here to help you navigate these difficult times.
