Indianapolis, IN (Mar 15, 2026) – A violent head-on collision claimed the life of a 37-year-old man on Indy’s near east side at approximately 2:00 a.m. Sunday, March 15. The crash occurred near the intersection of North Sherman Drive and East Washington Street.
According to preliminary evidence, a 19-year-old woman driving a black Chevrolet Camaro was traveling northbound on Sherman Drive at an extreme rate of speed. The vehicle briefly became airborne while crossing Washington Street and, upon landing, veered into the southbound lane. The Camaro struck an oncoming white Kia Forte head-on, killing the driver, identified as Isskandar Mohammed Al Handarish.
The 19-year-old woman was hospitalized with critical injuries and subsequently arrested on a preliminary charge of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated (OWI) Resulting in Death.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is continuing the investigation, and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make final charging decisions.
OWI Liability and Wrongful Death in Indiana
In Indiana, causing a fatal crash while impaired is considered a form of “gross negligence” that allows the victim’s family to pursue a wrongful death claim under IC § 34-23-1-1. Because the driver was allegedly intoxicated and traveling at speeds that caused the vehicle to become airborne, the estate may be eligible to seek punitive damages under IC § 34-51-3-4. These damages are intended to punish egregious misconduct and are available when a defendant shows a “conscious disregard” for the safety of others. Securing the chemical test results and black box data from the Camaro is a vital step in ensuring the responsible party is held fully accountable in civil court.
