Indianapolis, IN (Dec 13, 2024) – An Indiana State Police trooper was hospitalized Saturday morning after his cruiser was rear-ended by a pickup truck on I-465 near the Allisonville Road exit. The collision occurred around 4:07 a.m. on the northeast side of Indianapolis.
According to ISP officials, troopers were already on the scene managing two previous crashes involving a jackknifed semi-truck and a passenger car. While the patrol car was stationary with the trooper inside, a pickup truck failed to stop and struck the rear of the cruiser.
The trooper suffered lacerations to his head and arm. He was transported to a local hospital, treated, and released later in the day to recover at home. Disturbingly, officials noted that this marks the third time this specific officer has been struck by an impaired driver during his four-year career.
Police identified the driver of the pickup as 21-year-old Juan Cuatlacuatl of Indianapolis. He was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI), causing injury.
“Please stop crashing into our first responders,” urged ISP Indianapolis District Commander Lt. Josh Watson. All lanes of I-465 were closed for several hours while crews cleared the wreckage.
DUI-Related Collisions in Indiana, IN
Driving under the influence (DUI) remains a leading cause of serious crashes across Indiana, especially on major interstates such as I-465 and I-70. Impaired driving puts not only other motorists at risk but also first responders, who often work along high-speed roadways during emergencies.
Under Indiana law, victims of DUI-related collisions, including law enforcement officers and civilians, may seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income, rehabilitation, and emotional trauma. In addition, criminal charges against the at-fault driver do not prevent civil action for damages.
Indiana enforces strict penalties for impaired driving, and victims should act promptly to protect their rights. Consulting an experienced Indianapolis DUI accident attorney ensures critical evidence, such as toxicology reports, dashcam footage, and witness testimony, is preserved and properly used in a civil claim.
