What to do After a Car Accident in Indiana, IN?
If you are involved in a car accident in Indiana, immediate actions are critical to protect your health and legal rights:
- Seek Medical Care: Obtain a medical evaluation immediately, even if you feel fine. Adrenaline often masks internal injuries or concussions that require prompt treatment.
- Call 911: Ensure a formal police report is filed. This document is essential for insurance claims and determining liability.
- Gather Scene Evidence: If safe, take photos of vehicle damage, road conditions, and any traffic signals. Collect contact information from any witnesses.
- Avoid Discussing Fault: Do not apologize or admit blame at the scene. In Indiana’s “fault” system, statements made to the other driver or insurance adjusters can be used to limit your recovery.
- Consult an Attorney: Complex collisions involving fatalities require a detailed investigation into speed, distraction, or mechanical failure. Legal counsel ensures your rights are protected throughout the process.
