Tippecanoe County, IN (Jan 20, 2026) – An accident occurred Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 65, involving three semi-trucks in the southbound lanes north of the Indiana 25 exit. The incident took place approximately 30 minutes after an initial fatal pickup truck crash had already caused significant traffic backups in the area.
According to reports from the Tippecanoe County Coroner and investigating officers, a southbound semi-tractor with a trailer crashed into two other semi-trucks that had slowed or come to a stop due to the existing traffic congestion.
The driver of the striking semi-tractor was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. As of now, the identity of the deceased driver has not been released.
The drivers of the other two semi-trucks involved were not injured, and no additional injuries were reported from the scene.
The Indiana State Police continue to investigate the chain of events leading to the collision to determine the exact cause.
Semi-Truck Accidents in Indiana, IN
As seen on busy corridors like the I-65, semi-truck accidents are a significant safety concern due to the massive size and weight of commercial vehicles. When a semi-tractor and trailer are involved in a collision, the force of impact often leads to devastating consequences, particularly when vehicles are traveling at high freeway speeds.
Common causes of these accidents include distracted driving, speeding, and tailgating, which are especially dangerous when traffic slows or stops unexpectedly. During such accidents, survivors frequently suffer traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, internal injuries, and other conditions that require long-term medical treatment and rehabilitation.
Under personal injury and wrongful death laws, families of those who lose their lives in commercial vehicle accidents may have the right to pursue a legal claim. Seeking compensation is essential to help families manage the financial and emotional burdens caused by a sudden loss. Recoverable damages typically include medical and funeral expenses, lost future income and reduced earning capacity, and pain, suffering, and emotional distress.
Indiana law also imposes strict time limits for filing these claims. In most cases, the statute of limitations for personal injury and wrongful death claims is two years from the date of the accident or death. Failing to file within this period can permanently bar recovery, regardless of the severity of the injuries or losses involved.
